Rebecca and Jamie Start School

Oh my Goodness, it cannot be September 2011 already can it.... Jamie and Rebecca have gone back to school this week - Rebecca has moved up to the middle school / KS2 and now wearing a school tie!!

We have had a splendid August - I sort of took most of it off to look after them and be with them for some quality time and enjoyed almost every minute of it - absolutely fabulous. Had a list of things to do and didn't get round to doing half of them.

Anyway, back to work - and plenty of it to get through.

Got it at last - its so nervous it flies off at the slightest movement...

Went on an 8 mile walk with Cashman too - round the back of the Chiltern Open Air Museum but didn't see much wildlife - only a pied wagtail - which I caught beautifully out of focus.

Runner beans were lucky enough to be planted out in the afternoon.

Off to see Adam Ant soon which should be a laugh. Yuck are playing at the Scala next Wednesday which is tempting though it is sold out, few tickets on ebay though.

Played for the Summer 1st XI on Tuesday which was a laugh - I was playing sweeper which was good fun. Achilles and more worryingly the groin were hurting - still hurting five days later - oh what an athlete.

Went to Robertswood Rangers fun day today and also to CSG driving range with R & J and S. Noticed a few PCSO's at the school event and then wandering home noticed that i'm assuming they'd booked a load of cars for bad parking - which is odd as I'm wondering why they don't do it more in central CSP or GX outside Marks and Spencer.

Also went to the Life Member's Evening last night at the Sports Club which was a good evening out and met a few old faces - I must confess that Cash and I did have the odd glass of port though.

Flat out with work as well recently hence not many new posts. Still waiting for my web host company to upgrade my control panel so I can move this blog again (blog.watsy.com) by updating the cname - was supposed to be completed by the end of April - bit frustrating.

First Swallow of Summer

Went out for a run this evening and I spotted my first swallow of the summer - just by brawlings farm. I think there were two of them. Anyway, enjoyable run, went over the fields to the Dumb Bell, felt great then was a bit of a labour on the way back. Only a couple of calfs and right achilles hurt this evening. Ready then for the tour of Worthing in a couple of weeks. Sent out a request for ladies a couple of weeks ago and not a single response - not even a no I cannot make it - i've still got it lol....

Had a busy week and weekend. Sarah's last game of hockey for the season and I ended up going down the Thames on a neighbour's boat - the weather was great and it was so relaxing too - popped in for a couple of pints to a pub on the river which also had a big children's play area. We also went to a beach and watched the youngsters getting absolutely soaked in the freezing cold water - it was absolutely brilliant.

The rest of the weekend was pretty much spent working - I did a five year business plan for Cater For You which was very interesting - but I'm basically planning to leave it alone and get back to web design. I'm also going to take most of August off to to chill out a bit... maybe. Speaking of web design, I launched a web site for a really nice person in Chalfont St Peter who is doing fruit bouquets and chocolate bouquets - Fruitful Blooms. I designed in CSS from scratch - and took almost all the photos in the kitchen and I have to say the designs were brilliant - the chocolate dipped strawberries were great to look at and even better to eat. Much better idea than bouquets of flowers - last as long and you can eat them!!

I took Monday off to look after R & J and really enjoyed it - they were still a bit tired after Saturday when we were out a bit late but they were cool. The added bonus was that Charlie and Annalisa turned up - brilliant to see them again and looking forward to spending quite a lot of time with them before they dash back to Aus.

Jamie's Birthday, Gardening, Chalfont St Giles Picnic

We had an absolutely fabulous weekend kicked off with Jamie's family birthday party. The Birger's and Tomlinson's popped round to celebrate. R & J are always thrilled to William and Olivia and build lots of lego toys together.

Saturday morning Sarah's penultimate game had been cancelled so we spent the day pottering in the garden with R & J. I finally managed to get round to clearing my veg patch ready for the summer. However, I'm not going to have a greenhouse from a few week's time as there is nowhere to put the existing one and there isn't really anywhere sunny enough in the garden.

Sunday was another glorious weather day - I took Jamie for an enjoyable morning at hockey - he is really getting into it - he scored a goal too so was absolutely thrilled for most of the day. We then went to the swings via the Garden Club where I filled up on potting compost and mushroom compost!!

Monday I took a day off to look after R & J for the first day of Easter holidays - I absolutely loved spending a day relaxing with them and not doing any work - doing it again next Monday cannot wait already.

We went for a lovely picnic by the pond in Chalfont St Giles - walking through the footpaths and the fields to get there. It was another great weather day and we saw some new ducklings - they were tiny, had an ice cream, pottered around and wandered back. A simply wonderful few hours :-)

Drinking, hockey euphoria and another tooth

What a week - I've been absolutely flat out with work and play. My objective for the week was to install a new server in c4u and have Sage installed and all linked in with Actinic and thus (eventually having live stock checking). I bought the server, but I'm afraid it took me too long to figure out anything so having to get a professional in to sort out the adding of computers and remote logging in. Hopefully I can set up the Sage ok from there. The expert said he'd also set up Exchange - which is interesting.

The financial year ended with C4U being up by about 55% on last year - which is encouraging but need to keep driving forward. Now working on the business plan for the next five years.

Apart from that I was also doing a stack of work on web sites and generally working all hours - except for a business luncheon function on Tuesday which was held at Missenden Abbey - a very nice location indeed and caught up with a few people.

Friday night was the start of a superb hockey weekend. It was the Junior awards evening held in the Marquee at the sports club. The extended Watts / Birger Tomlinson family were all present and correct and a very good evening of presentations and dancing was had by all. Unluckily we won on the raffle and Jamie took away a great big arrangement of lollipops. We were so tired we didn't quite get up at the same time as R & J on Saturday morning and their breakfast was .....

However, I'm pretty sure this had no bearing on this next picture.

Rebecca's second top tooth finally fell out swiftly following the other one. She also has two brand new teeth which have surfaced at the behind her current ones - quite a flurry. Amazing the trauma of them coming through only 4 years ago and then falling out seamlessly (almost). Rebecca's tooth fell out in the morning. However I was rather distracted by the afternoon's hockey game.

It turned out that although the 3rd XI were relegated a few weeks ago, the relegation line had recently moved and if, against the odds, we could snatch another 3 points against an always well organised Henley team we could unbelievable stay up. I've been playing for about 15 years now and am almost 40, the odd injury - surely it shouldn't be bothering me anymore. However, I was so nervous all morning and by the time of the game just stacked full of adrenaline it was absurd. Anyway, we only went and won 4-3 - a magnificent team performance from everyone on the pitch great passing defending and finishing. I was euphoric all afternoon and into the evening (and whilst writing about it now!!) - the evening of the end of season dinner dance.

The season's finale was a very very good evening - well done to Rowe for organising another great one. Didn't catch up with nearly enough people who I only briefly said hello's too - also thanks to Beanie and Bill for dropping Sarah and me off and picking us up - though I foolishly left my jacket at the clubhouse durgh.... I didn't take any decent pictures of the evening - but there are a load on Facebook from other people.

Sunday was a much quieter day, mowed the lawn, did some work, had a roast lunch and took R & J for a short walk.

Also managed to help out Martin for a couple of hours over the weekend who moved house - well done to him and Mel.

Two New Birds

Two new birds have ventured onto the new bird table today - one is a greenfinch, not 100% sure of the other one but think it is a lesser redpoll which is quite rare according to the RSPB web site.

I was thinking today how different the species are even just down the road from where we used to live. We used to have flocks of starlings and sparrows in Cross Lanes, but not a single one of those at the edge of the village. Fairly similar environment too maybe slightly more woody here...

Came home from Trading Depot on Thursday evening, and spring was definitely in the air - the rest of the Watts family were having a bar-b-q!!!! As you can see a disposable bar-b-q was burning brightly with chicken kebabs next to the garden rockery and the beautiful Cherry Blossom on the tree at the bottom of the garden - it really is stunning at the moment.

On Friday night I went down to the Waggon and Horses for a quick drink with John where we had a very productive board meeting - made some exciting decisions for Cater For You.

Saturday morning, my missing screws were sent by IKEA for my final CD rack - and I'm delighted to say I just had enough space for all my CD's. So my study / working environment is just about complete with good desk and PC and all my music surrounding me - superb - just like Cross Lanes was.

Saturday afternoon I went and played another away game (seems to be all away games this year) at the beach in Slough - Herschel School against South Bucks - and we only went and bloody won it - the first points of the year in a game of hockey I've been involved in. We took a team photo which I'll load up to the hitsports site later this week if I get a chance (though doubt it completely and utterly overloaded with work this week).

Saturday night I went along for Mark's 30th birthday party in the Village Hall - after a couple wandered back down to the White Hart and then sloped off for a quick chicken kebab for the walk home - haven't had a kebab for years and years - it was horrible!!

Sunday we decided on the spur of the moment to go to Eastbourne and see the rest of the Watts family - R & J wanted to see Grandma and Grandpa Watts and also go to the beach. They had (and I) a fabulous time. Some great photos of them on the beach with their cousins (see below. Sarah (sister) also had a look at my feet as I was hobbling a bit on Sunday and her official podiatrist diagnosis was the achilles are swollen. So came away with a few exercises to stretch the back of my legs. Just one more game though - away to Henley next week.

Milton Keynes, Ikea and new music additions

Very quiet weekend this weekend after the busy previous two. I was a last minute call up to the 2nd XI on Friday evening, a mad dash to Milton Keynes for a 2pm push back after Sarah had finished her game and returned at 12.30. It was my first game for the 2's - just the 1's and Vintagers and I've managed all teams in half a season of hockey!

Anyway, we lost as usual but I popped into Ikea as I required some more CD racks to house my newly repatriated CD and record collection from garage to study. I bought five more and a bookcase which all fitted with ease into the capacious Honda Jazz (which also managed 55mpg on the way home still - best ever!). So i now have room for over 1200 CD albums and CD singles. To celebrate I went and purchased some more which are now currently being ripped for the phone:

I bought some 'tights' to wear on my legs a couple of weeks ago, so my hamstring hasn't gone now for two weeks - though I have had to suffer some verbal abuse 'watsy you've got sarah's tights on pal' etc etc Current injuries are painful feet, both achilles, left calf, right hamstring, right groin, knackered shoulder. I think they are all down to my pair of Adidas astros I bought a year ago think they are too tight and I knock my whole body out of line. oh to be half my age....

Speaking of hockey, uploaded a new sports club web site last week - now moving on to the hockey one - hitssports version.

Also uploaded a new V10 Actinic version of Cater For You's main web site - interesting to see what will happen with the rankings on it. At least the weather has turned warmer - the warehouse will be bearable for another couple of months before it becomes like an oven...

Top Front Tooth

After weeks of wobbling, grimacing and non apple eating, the top baby tooth has finally wobbled free. It happened last week at 8.30 - the lengths they go to for delaying tactics is very impressive these days. The bottom two have already fallen out last year and grown through - the other front one is also wobbly.

Cup Cake Boxes / Packaging

Whilst I had the giant photo booth at home, I did some photos for Cater For You which is unusual these days as Mark normally does them. However, we bought some cup cakes from the village to show off our new Cup Cake Boxes which we've brought in by the pallet load.

Anyway, Rebecca and Jamie decided this would be good fun to join and next thing I knew they were balanced inside the booth on top of the dining room table .... what could go wrong...

Grand Union Canal / Ash & Debs

No hockey this weekend, so my side may not have lost - well they probably did as most of them did loose! Sarah played and won - though their big game is this weekend again the run away leaders.

The weekend got off to a good start as on Thursday night we thought that the fireproof sheets I'd smashed up in our bedroom and fragments and sent dust flying everywhere(I discovered they were fireproof as they didn't burn in a bonfire) might be Asbestos Insulating Board - and subsequently didn't sleep Thurs night in our panic that we'd have to get a professional deep cleaning / remove people in. However, Sarah went to a place in Watford with a piece of it to have it analysed at a lab for £40 and was told it was Superlux - an AIB asbestos free product - what a massive relief.

Anyway, a great weekend ensued after that with Ash and Debs and family coming down to visit us on Friday afternoon. We just stayed in on Friday night cooking a chorizo and chicken risotto (chorizo seems to be in every recipe at the moment but credit to a Mr G Brown for my inspiration for this) which was very good. Saturday morning was raining so we stayed in but when Sarah got home we tripped off to London and the London Transport Museum where we whiled away the afternoon. R & J loved it - r seems to be fascinated with maps at the moment. As always, the train trip was almost the best part of the day.

Saturday morning we went down to Harefield / Coy Carp and had a walk down the Grand Union Canal in glorious sunshine. It is such a beautiful little spot and a great haven for wildlife and just a generally relaxing walk. We managed to get back to the car just as the heavens opened with rain.

In the afternoon I (with Jamie) put up my birthday present bird feeder. I'm hoping it is squirrel proof but will soon see I suppose. So far in three days (and not being there much) i've seen the long tailed tits, blue tits and nut hatches. I also spotted another bird which I'm not sure what it is - a Dunnock maybe - hopefully someone can help with the ID.

Hamster vs Popeye

Tremendously busy at the moment. Picked up three new web sites last week - all very interesting and varied - I worked out on Sunday night i've currently got over 20 live projects bubbling around which is good fun.

My being busy wasn't helped by I.T. 'issues' - I was trying to re-install an old Dell machine and bring it back into service but could I a. find the original disks and b. reinstall XP from another disk - tried everything - the final straw was when I finally dug out a later copy of XP it couldn't find the keyboard - upgraded load of bios stuff still couldn't find it, found a PS2 keyboard, to no avail - then another old Dell I recently brought back gave up the ghost and so I just bought two PC's later on Wednesday night!! Also bought a couple of Windows 7 licences - just going to give that Dell one last go...

I've been going back to Trading Depot on a regular basis again - they've really grown in the last couple of years - I've been working on the project for four years now - though its only been launched for around 3 years. Its just great being able to just sit down and concentrate on one thing all day - then listen to voicemails on the journey home!!

Finally got round to booking Martin's stag do - I swore I'd never fly on Ryanair again - and I really don't trust them. Cocked up a name slightly so went to do name change - £100 - phoned up the premium rate number and explained it was a time out error as making calls as the cost kept going up so had to check with Martin and hence why spelt wrong - she put it right. Still haven't had a confirmation email yet.

Saturday was hockey day as usual. Played for the 3's and I was really looking forward to it. However, there were 14 players and lets just say I didn't enjoy it - we went to the sports club quiz night in the evening and think I bored the pants of my team of why I didn't enjoy it - apologies for that. Better not explain too much here. Not playing this week as Ash and family are down - but after the game I just wanted to put on my hitsports 'not available' for the rest of the season.

Good news on the hockey club front though - it was announced at the quiz that some sort of planning has been given for Newland Park and more specifically for the double astro - it was either conditional or outline or something like that... Very exciting and something I've personally worked on and off for for over 10 years. I can take no credit for the current project though - a few club individuals have worked unbelievably hard to get us to where we are now - though the journey is now only just beginning.

Sunday was by contrast a great day. Got up and after a full english breakfast (bacon, mushrooms, fried egg, fried potato, tomatoes etc) got out into the garden and with Jamie's help moved the greenhouse back to where it was a year ago and began smashing up the decking ready to bury the mountain of rubble you can see in the photo above. Speaking of which we had a lovely afternoon with Al, Catherine and Cash. Al has opened a book on how long the new hamster 'dusty' will survive in the house with Popeye. She arrived on Monday and is living in her new home in the hallway. Tried to Skype Annie but wasn't there - sorry about that Annie - thought it would be fun to all catch up. Also got some good photos of us playing pin the tail on the donkey - after a bottle of port of course...

Went to the parent's evenings, sorry consultations last Thursday - pretty good overall. Rebecca is improving which is good news and Jamie is kind and considerate. Rebecca is on the verge of losing her top two teeth which means she can't eat apples any more, but strangely manages sweets...

Interesting that this blog post will appear within about 15 minutes in the Blogger RSS / atom feed, but takes almost 24 hours - normally around 17 - to appear in Facebook. Automated the Trading Depot twitter feed and blogs into their Facebook last week - so they don't have to touch Facebook. I have got a Twitter account but have absolutely no time to do anything with it.

We Scored Three Goals

Very quiet weekend comparatively - Martin was in bed ill all weekend so didn't go out to play on Saturday evening so just stayed in and worked on Fri and Sat night. Just as well he was really, I played for the 3's on Saturday again, up in Witney this time (who said I only play home games!) and at centre half. Rather fatigued by the end of it - don't worry we lost though, 6-3 - my jinx on all teams is still in tact. We were 4 down in about 10 minutes until Pete Westaway moved to centre defensive midfield and took control of the game. We got it back to 4-3 down at one stage but alas they broke whilst we were trying to find an equaliser. Good fun though and looking forward to this weekend's game. The injury was slightly worse on Sunday morning than it has been since I returned - but fine by Monday so think I should make the end of the season which is good.

On Sunday we had a very pleasant day, a meal in Chesham round at an old school friends - Jon Dyas. A beautiful old house next to the Chess river and Chesham Moor and a lovely roast lamb :-) Went for a rather wet walk round the chess - where apparently there are a few kingfishers. R & J loved getting wet and muddy in the stream surrounding banks. Here the four tinkers were playing pooh sticks under a bridge.

I've been agonising whether to stand for Parish Councillor again - I would absolutely love to do it again but the reason I gave up last time was I didn't have enough time - and as Sarah pointed out - if anything I have less time now. Agonising over whether to put myself forward or not. Been asked to an interview Wed evening so will have to decide by tonight I suppose.

Sarah's birthday last week too - had a lovely meal with the Birger family all popping round for a take away Thai - very nice evening indeed. Photos will go up on Facebook soon.

Port & Brandy

Someone told me last week - sorry forgot who - that I should try this drink especially as port is one of my favourite tipples - full bodied wine as I prefer to think of it. I can't stand brandy (and pretty much every other spirit in the rack) so was rather dubious about how good this drink was going to be.

Anyway, I had a tentative sip from a glass of the stuff and I have to say it was rather good. The port was still as smooth and full with the brandy only really kicking in as it goes down the throat and creates a warm burning (but pleasant) sensation.

Probably not an everyday drink me thinks though...

Hockey, Junior Hockey and Meals Out

Busy weekend as usual. Friday night John and I had a c4u board meeting - in the Waggon, it was very productive too ... probably. Bumped into quite a few robertswood dads who were on their way to the George. It was quite a relief to get in the pub as had to work rather hard all week in C4U then CWD in the evenings - half of the workforce were on holiday. Decided we are going to double our personnel count so interviewing this week.

Saturday morning struggled out of bed as was so tired after previous week actually having to work hard (!) but we popped over to Amersham to do some shopping for Sarah's birthday. Didn't actually see much for Sarah but bought some bits and bobs for R & J - lego books, dinosaur books and A & C hockey kit (see photo).

On Saturday afternoon I played for the 3's again - and again I was on the losing side. I did score a goal at last though which was good - had another disallowed - no advantage - had to laugh. The game was against Sonning.

Saturday evening Sarah and I celebrated my sister's arrival by going out for a delightful meal at the Crown in Chalfont St Giles - great service, great wine, great food and very enjoyable evening out. A group next to us had a few too many glasses of something and managed to knock the moose's head off the wall - the landlord didn't appear too impressed. We had a glass of wine in the Fox and Hounds before going in there - a real traditional pub - might try there for home cooked food next time we go out together.

Whilst we were ploughing through our second bottle of rather tasty Sicilian wine, we thought it would be a good idea to take Jamie up for hockey with the under 8's in Milton Keynes (Rebecca was rather ill on Thurs so not a good idea for her to join in). So we duly got there for 10 next morning - and of course Jamie was too shy to join in. However we bumped into their older Cousins William and Olivia and they had a great time playing hockey up there.

After that we thought it would be a good idea to visit Wolverton church St James. There are supposed to be some relatives of mine in there - but we wandered round several times and couldn't find a slab with Charles Watts marked on it. Hey ho.

So we made our way back home ready for Sarah's birthday...

Not great tits

Had a great weekend, very busy as usual. Had a good game of hockey on Saturday for the 3's against Maidenhead - lost as usual - don't think I've played for a winning side yet this year - but a good old scrap. Some of the youngsters playing are astonishingly good, sublime stick skills just need to pass a bit. I was surprised by their strength in tackles against players twice their age.

Saturday night was very good - had a quiet drink in the Dumb Bell - the highlight of the evening being whilst we were just chatting away, there was a massive crash next to us - Martin had missed the stool and was looking blearily back at us all from underneath a table - very amusing indeed. Then had a very coherent conversation on Skype with Mr Wooler.

Sunday morning we put some food out for the birds on our bird table and had loads of visitors - including four 'long tailed tits' - no great tits or blue tits this time. Also just behind the fence in the back garden there was a whole flock of Redwings turning the leaves over looking for grubs - must have been 20 or 30 of them. With my appetite whetted, Cash and I went and took Mylo for a walk round Hedgerley where there is an RSPB wood. As you can see from the photo we knew where we were going as usual - great countryside, fabulous views but not as much wildlife as the back garden!!

Birthday weekend

'Celebrated' another birthday in very enjoyable fashion this weekend. First off was a lovely meal with Sarah's mum and Dad on the Friday, then on Saturday had a good game of hockey with the fifth XI vs Marlow 3a's (I think) - we lost 4-0 but I just about managed to keep going at centre half for the whole game so was a very good run around. Went back to their club house after the game - good team spirit in the 5's and some good characters coming through the ranks. Groin knackered on Sunday as usual.

Saturday night was a very enjoyable evening with Cash and Beanie and bumped into Banner in the Waggon. We did make one critical error though and decided not to bother with the curry instead filling up on nuts and crisps! Not to worry we thought until we had a text from Zoe to go to the George. Ended up there until it closed d'oh.

Anyway, went to hockey training to watch Jamie play hockey on Sunday morning, unfortunately he was too cold straight away and wouldn't play. So back the house to cook the big lump of beef Sarah bought for our meal - 16 of us round the table. Very enjoyable afternoon it was too - and good banter. The port was delicious too - the most popular present of the day for some reason.

New Phone and Builder 'Finished'

I've decided to take all my friends advice - and go for an Iphone. It was either that or an HTC but the vast majority of people said get an Iphone. It arrived at 11 this morning - and seems pretty good except it isn't registering / activating - i'd have though 12 hours later it would have done it by now. Itunes seems pretty slow too - especially importing my 100gb of music on my network. I'm also trying to figure out if my laptop on its docking station can take advantage of the 5.1 surround sound rather than the stereo it is pushing out at the moment - there doesn't seem to be an option anywhere - a shame as i've a brand new 7.1 waiting to be installed but pointless if only two speakers work...

Terry has moved out today - his last official day building here since starting in September - he's done an absolutely fabulous job. We now have a pile of rubble move in the back garden for the landscaping and some painting inside. The last thing is the kitchen floor which is being put in at the end of January.

Played hockey for the 4's last weekend, at left back - rather out of breath to start with but got into it by the end. Unfortunately the adductor muscle was hurting on Sunday morning - good job I've taken it easy for the last 12 months then ...

Longest Walk in a While

Had a splendid weekend though I was feeling a bit under the weather on Fri and Saturday. On Friday night we had a lovely evening with the family Birger, 11 of us round there for a very tasty meal and the odd glass of wine then straight to bed!

Saturday was a delightful day with Rebecca and Jamie, we went to the swings, the library to choose a few books and DVD's, the bakers for a very tasty doughnut then off to watch R & J's cousin and uncle play for the Badgers at Newland Park and take a few photos. Saturday night early to bed, ready for the mammoth walk on Sunday!!

After a hearty breakfast, Cash and I left at 10am and returned at 4.30 in the afternoon. We walked via as many footpath's as we could - past the Dumb Bell, down to West Hyde, round the lakes and then along the Grand Union Canal to Rickmansworth Aquadrome. The main purpose (as well as a very pleasant walk) was to test our cameras and take a few photos of the wildlife. I'm convinced I spotted a Kingfisher near the lake at the Coy Carp pub. The nature reserve we specifically went to see we managed to bypass!! We also spotted a few other birds - if you click the title or here that will take you to a few photos of the day. The heron was magnificent in particular. We then went through Mill End and the edge of Chorleywood via the Swillet pub (?) a very nice real ale pub and then back home through Newland Park. It was extremely enjoyable, but Mylo still wasn't tired and kept pulling us along - i'm aching today (Monday) including my groin which is rubbish - miles away from playing hockey I think. We were planning our next walk though - maybe round Ley Hill - I also fancy wandering down a footpath on the left of the main drive of Newland Park - we've only gone right so far.

Speaking of hockey, I'm tempted just to play once every few weeks but want to be fit for the tour to Hong Kong in April - especially as Charlie might well join up with us from Australia (must mention that to Gary and Mark)...

Apart from that - not a lot else going on at the moment...

October Half Term

It is half term this week so I decided to take two days off work. As it turned out, I went for a meal at the Milton's Head in Chalfont St Giles with the family and have worked for the rest of it. We had a very pleasant meal there and very reasonably priced indeed.I had a chicken breast and seasonal veg - including brussel sprouts which were very tasty!

Sarah has been very busy with R & J and took them to Windsor on Tuesday to a full royal procession to welcome a Middle Eastern entourage - apparently Jamie was enthralled by the whole thing - including the machine guns on display!! Here is a photo Sarah took of Prince Philip:

Speaking of Prince's and Princess's, Rebecca went to a party on Saturday afternoon - and here is a photo of her getting ready - I think it dawned on me she is no longer my little baby but is growing up extremely rapidly:

Sarah has also taken them to a steam railway the other site of Aylesbury - they had a real fire at the front of the train Daddy :-) The only thing hampering us all is a sore throat, temperature and cough which is doing the rounds.

The extension is going extremely well - the study is almost finished, windows are in and the plaster is drying just need a bit more plaster, door, painting and carpet etc and I'll be able to move in :-) The major part of the extension is also coming along nicely - the steels are the major bit now which are going in early next week:

Had a fabulous evening on Saturday night, a few drinks in the Greyhound and then over to the George for a few more drinks and a knees up - well done to Sarah D for organising it - it was just like the usual Saturday night about 10 years ago at the hockey club - loads of people down there having a laugh. Still not playing hockey... really hoping the final bit of pain goes away soon and I'll give it a try - not been on a run to help it recover - though the way I was dancing to Come On Eileen on Saturday night might not have helped it ...

Work is going well at the moment - plenty of it. Had an interesting meeting with an ERP reseller at a client's this morning - I'm still working on Sage 50 and linking various web sites and various quantities of product into it. As part of this upgrade I launched my second Actinic V10 web site over the weekend - www.cater4trade.co.uk received the treatment. Single page per product instead of the old pop up page with images that can be enlarged and on a couple of pages multiple images on one page.

The first Actinic V10 site I launched was a revamped Grant and Stone web site. That also features extended pages for some of the products - there is quite a lot of work to do on it still which is done every week!! As part of it I recently took hundreds of photos of the TD Line Switches and Sockets - which need to be cut out and uploaded. Took photos of the back as well - see if I get round to doing those ! I have another V10 ready to launch but not heard back from the client recently - shame as it is the best yet... Two others in the pipeline which will hopefully be out in the next two months.

What Spending review - hardly worth the media drama - real spending is going up over the next few years - surely the point of the exercise was to get in back in line with the growth it should have had post 2001 before labour tried to buy their way back to power and then ramp up even more with a poisened chalice.

A Weekend With Cash

We all had a lovely weekend in the beautiful sunny weather. I principally spent the weekend with cashman, who only popped round to measure up the kitchen!! We took Mylo for a walk on Saturday afternoon and went via the back of Newland Park over the edge of Maple Cross over the M25. What a beautiful walk give or take the rubbish dumped in various places.

On Sunday we took the rest of the family on the walk - it was in hindsight way too far for R & J - and I have subsequently been feeling rather guilty about that. We did stop halfway though for a lovely meal in the Dumb Bell. I cannot believe what good service they gave even though they were flat out - nothing was too much trouble - very highly recommended indeed. The food was very good too.

Spotted a few birds on the walk (including Ostriches behind the Dumb Bell!!) on Saturday before Mylo surprisingly and we talked about maybe walking to a nature reserve in Harefield and also a quick walk to Chorleywood one day. The farmer at the back of Newlands isn't particularly friendly though, took a slightly wrong turning and he fired up behind us in his Land Rover and gave us some advice. With I'd known about how much crap he'd dumped in the wood (Bottom Wood) and mentioned that to him whilst he was lecturing us about trespassing by a few metres.

Museum of London

Rebecca and Jamie have started really well at school - Jamie is now well into his first term in Reception. Rebecca who is notoriously dificult to arouse the attention of and keep interested but she has been particularly interested in a study of the Fire of London.

So.... a quick scan of the Internet revealed that the (Free to Visit) Museum of London has a dedicated section to the 1666 fire. Rebecca (and Jamie) were thrilled with it and we spent a while looking at the paintings, video documentary and items from that time - this photo is of them trying on different fireman's helmets.

Just like our previous visit to the Science Museum there is so much to read and absorb - great for children and adults alike. They had a complete spectrum of information from the beginnings of London right to the current day and the future.

After visiting the museum we went and had a Pizza Express just round the corner - got to say the service was pretty poor and we left rather late. However, on the way to the restaurant I took this great photo of Rebecca and Sarah - in front of part of the original London Wall in amongst the brand new state of the art city buildings.

Speaking of state of the art buildings, our extension is coming along rather well - our builder is managing the whole thing brilliantly and we have total confidence in him - the only thing he cannot control is the weather which has held up the actual bricklaying which is a shame. I'm still not playing hockey yet, groin is still knackered - though a lot better it was painful just messing around on the astro with Jamie the other Sunday morning - wondering if I'll have to write off the season until January now. Jamie is enjoying playing football on Saturday morning too - though he ran out of food / energy on Saturday I think so became a bit unsettled. Anyway, we bought him some £1 astro shoes from Ebay which he was particularly pleased about. Football boots start at size 10 - he's size 7 so a while to go yet!!

Rebecca is keeping active with gymnastics which his jolly good.

A long update, as none for ages everything else the same - busy with work, busy with life and generally coping - not had any problems with arthritis for a few years now which is great news. Hopefully start posting shorter but more frequents posts soon.

Gardening and Wildlife

What a fabulous bank holiday weekend we've just had, I even managed to do a few things I meant to do. Saturday was a bit of a wash out but we did chill out - I even went for a run - and then went out for a swift pint or two with an old hockey mate.

Sunday I spent most of the day in the garden, cleared and enlarged my vegetable patch and half built a 'cage' for my brocolli - what a waste of time as it only held four plants - I managed to plant out my runner beans, french beans, brocolli, peas and other bits and bobs by Sunday evening. On Saturday I managed to get the photo of two swallows seemlingly talking to each other - they were on the house down the hill on top of the TV aerial. They then flew right overhead a number of times catching flies I assume.

Sunday we popped down to the 'Water Splash' just past Chalfont Park. Rebecca and Jamie cycled down there - reminiscent of when my sister and I used to cycle down there. They are both cycling fairly well now - Rebecca attempted to cycle through the fjord - did really well but took her feet of the pedals as they might get wet - she slowed down and retreated back into the fjord, fell over and got very wet - hence why she is wearing my jumper in this photo.

We then went to the main water splash bit which I love - I was just taking a photo or two of some swans and Canadian geese and heard a splash - Jamie didn't realise that the water was covered in blossom and thought it was water and was up to his thighs in the 'lake' - good job Dad was paying attention - whoops...

Round to Grandma and Grandpa's for early evening tea in the evening.

Rebecca's First Tooth Falls Out

Crickey, is r that old already - how scarey. Today, during a roast pork dinner, her first tooth fell out. I believe the tooth fairy has already visited - but unfortunately I must have missed them. The tooth that fell out already has the new tooth half grown behind it...

Both of them were cycling really well around our road today - really impressive - off to Centreparcs soon for lots of cycling.

Easter in Eastbourne

I was limping towards Easter after working all hours and generally being flat out with life, so it was great to pop down to Eastbourne and re-charge the batteries over the weekend. We had a lovely time catching up with all the Watts family - Rebecca and Jamie get on so well with their cousins its great. Below is a family photo with my mum and Dad in.

On Saturday night Sarah and I went out for a meal together - we couldn't remember the last time it was just us two together. We went to a restaurant in Seaford I've previously blogged about before - and it was delightful and food and service was just amazing. Saturday during the day we had been to a sun drenched Druzilla's where we quite happily spent all day looking at the animals and playing on the play equipment.

Unbelievably, it has been Jamie's birthday this week - four already - it only seems like yesterday he popped out! I expect I'll be saying that every year until he is 18.

Last game of the season for hockey this Saturday - playing against my old friends at Aylesbury - looking forward to it - a shame I cannot stay for a drink after the game but have to hot foot it back for Jamie's birthday party. Out for an end of season curry in Wycombe in the evening - all go.

Spring Weather

At last, the freezing cold winter seems to be passing, and spring is springing. A beautiful day on Sunday, so Rebecca decided that we were having a picnic outside - which was an excellent idea - I promise I wasn't as grumpy as I look in the photo.

We were also celebrating as Rebecca had achieved a level 2 swimming certificate and moved up a class and James was very pleased to have spent a second week at Junior hockey training - Rebecca also went before swimming and enjoyed it.

As you can see, I completed the move of my greenhouse to a sunnier spot on the decking, though Sarah has 'mentioned' that it now blocks the view of the field from the kitchen but it is ready for spring planting (though I should have started already). I've also completely dug over the veg patch ready - I think I'm way ahead of schedule for once. The lawn is going to be scarified next weekend. Unfortunately the carrots I planted before Christmas received some extra close attention from R & J and are half the number now...

Still playing hockey, though frustratingly I haven't scored for a couple of weeks, any my groin injury is getting worse - just two games left to the end of the season thank goodness.

Work has been extremely busy, but at least I've found a new warehouse - twice the size of the current one and higher. Web design has also been very busy especially as I'm still learning how to bespoke Actinic V9 with CSS. Launched a couple of new web sites too as well as maintaining existing customers. Things aren't helped by the fact I'm going to have to move all my customers blog's to a new blogging system as blogger.com is stopping FTP - I've moved one already to a blog spot but that isn't the best solution for SEO and smooth integration on one web site.

Gardening and more

I've been even more busy than normal with work, family and hockey and more besides.

I'm still just about playing hockey each weekend, I have a groin problem though which is gradually getting worse each week - just about manageable on the Saturday then i cannot get out of bed or cough on Sunday until it gradually gets better through the week again. Still playing up front too - longest spell up front for several years.

On the Sunday's we've been doing family things - swimming and gardening and homework. Rebecca is taking swimming lessons in Burnham for a few more weeks, Jamie is reluctant to do lessons so for the first week I took him up to CSP on Sunday morning whilst Sarah took Rebecca. Met the Scotts up there which made for a pleasant 'swim' - though you can't stand around and chat as you are constantly making sure aforementioned children aren't drowning lol. Rebecca is doing very well with her swimming and Jamie can do about half a width under water - just need to get him to get his head out of the water and breath... Rebecca also has her first wobbly tooth - I've noted this so I can look it up in years to come!!

The garden is coming along nicely - I've turned over the whole of the veg patch and introduced my old raised bits and filled them with compost. I had a couple of little helpers for that as you can see. I just need to move the Greenhouse onto the knackered decking so that the diggers can come past for the building work later in the year (we got our planning permission a few weeks ago). Then once it is moved I can start off my seedlings.

Work is completely nuts at the moment, web design work coming out of my ears and cater for you is miles ahead of last year - so much so we are just about to get another warehouse double the size of the current one which we only moved into 15 months ago...

Quite a few other things happening, but days, weeks and months are just vanishing before me....

Very enjoyable weekend

What a rather splendid weekend. Managed to polish off a load of work on Friday night, then had a lovely time with R & J on Saturday morning - we built some robots - which we'd been reading Harry and the Dinosaurs build - so that was rather pleasing. The 1's were short so I lumbered up to Wokingham - I don't think I've played there before as I didn't recognise it - a newly laid pitch apparently - very good it was too. We won 4-1 which was rather good - good fun chasing defenders down with Warren too - I was playing up front for the first time in about 18 months. Here's a glorious action photo of me probably missing the ball.

In the evening I did some more work then we went to Chalfont swimming pool for the first time. It was great - got there at 11, nice and empty the water was warm, the air was cold and they had loads of swimming play objects all round the pool - which R & J loved diving after - their swimming is coming along nicely at the moment.

Sunday afternoon after our Roast Chicken we had an afternoon clearing up the garden - a very large bonfire in the veg patch and cleared some chopped down shrub / small tree branches off the decking - ready to move the greenhouse on to it. I'm sure I've spent way too much time the last few years trying to sort the bloody greenhouse - I'm going to have to get a few mates round to help me move it onto there too and remove the existing water feature.

Christmas 2009

We had a splendid Christmas with the Watts family Eastbourne popping up, all told 9 of us sitting round the dinner table for lunch. For the second year in a row we managed to deliver dinner to the table like clockwork - a stroke of genius by Sarah's preparations as usual.

It was a shame all of the snow had just about melted, but we did go for a walk on Boxing Day and there was some snow left in places and a small snowball fight broke out. We had to curtail the walk though as the area was pretty wet and some feet didn't have wellington boots!

Weekend away on the Isle of Wight

We had a great weekend away on the Isle of Wight near Yarmouth from Friday to Monday. The whole Birger family got together to celebrate Mrs B's birthday and everyone really enjoyed it. The whole weekend went off with a hitch - the cottage was absolutely brilliant fantastically equipped for the 11 of us, very spacious with a tennis court / astro pitch in the garden. There is also a summer heated swimming pool. It backed onto the River Yar and provided some spectacular frosty views for us. There is a jetty there too. We are probably going to book it for a summer holiday - I'll post a full portfolio of photos onto Facebook when I have time.

We went out for some lovely walks - one to Yarmouth for dinner at the George and the next day parked at The Needles and walked up Tennison Down and had a look at the monument there. Jamie sprinted most of the way there and back - Rebecca wasn't quite so happy - both of them didn't like the bitter cold. The views were quite spectacular as you can partially see in the photo below.

Came off the ferry to Lymington at 11 and got back home within a couple of hours. Just as well as the snow came down again and caused gridlock absolutely everywhere. I walked to get some milk and the snowstorm was beautiful - the road and everything else was completely white - picture postcard. Even today the journey in to work at Bourne End was quite spectacular with snow hanging on the trees frozen.

Nokia N86 - photos fault

My Nokia N86 is ok - I've had it a few months - since it was released in the Summer I think. However, it has developed an annoying fault in that the photos screen keeps coming up when you put the phone down - I assume that it thinks the shutter is open so the sensor is playing up. I wouldn't mind but despite it being 8MP the photos aren't much good unless it is a bright days outside. Indoor and slightly gloomy photos are hopeless - always blurred.

I bought the Nokia as I normally buy NOkia and didn't want to follow the crown with an Iphone - now I understand there is a reason why people are buying the Iphone - it is better...

I do use most of the functions on it though - Sat Nav, Email, Photos, as a phone!, MP3 player as it plugs into the car...

Birds - woodpeckers, redwings and chaffinches

I've been testing out my new camera lens again - as you'll see I haven't quite got it right yet - the woodpecker is slightly (!) out of focus. There were lots of birds on the grass feasting on something the other day - even a family of Redwings - I counted at least 3 which isn't bad considering the RSPB site has them as fairly rare. Walking Mylo

Cashman very kindly invited us over for Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago - a beautiful peppered roast beef :-)

Rebecca though was most interested in giving Mylo attention and taking him for a walk - she absolutely loves dogs and seeing Mylo was great. We went for a lovely walk round leachcroft woods - though i was amazed by the burnt out cars here and there - and the motorbikes that were in an adjacent field that had obviously come up the footpass. Aside from that it is amazing how many green fields and how much beautiful countryside there is on our doorstep. Jamie loved running around, jumping and swinging on trees and things.

This weekend I'm joining up with Mike, Scott and hopefully Chris in Milton Keynes (!!) to celebrate Mike's 40th birthday. Visiting a nightclub and hopefully staying in a hotel up there - though I haven't booked yet like everyone else!! I remember at College there were about 4 or 5 people with birthdays on Dec 4th - Mike, Jim Wilson and I cannot remember the others...

Hockey, Music and Work

As usual I've been flat out with work and life in general. I seem to be constantly busy and pretty much knackered from it all the time. Take this weekend for example actually probably not a great example as I was chilling with Rebecca and Jamie at home on Sunday, but Friday night I was busy working until 12 or something stuffing envelopes and general computer work, then up to help Martin move - but I got there too late and didn't help at all - still did the shopping at the butchers. Then off to hockey where we should have anhiliated Phoenix and Ranelagh - we were up 4-0 in what seemed like 10 minutes but only won 5-3 in the end. Hot footed it from there to home, shower and on the train for the Girlschool / Damned / Motorhead gig. Cracking gig it was too but I was pleased i'd bought some ear plugs for the first time as I actually heard the music without my ears blowing up as per the last couple of gigs.

The gig was very good but I was disappointed with my ticket selection again - we were right at the back of the venue behind the seats standing up against a rail - must have been the last tickets available. Scott measured 110 decibels on his iphone - quite loud. Took the ear plugs out for the last song and the noise was extraordinary.

Been really busy at work - not helped by the fact our warehouseman contracted flu - rather badly too so we were in the warehouse for most of last week trying to keep up.

Just doing some work at the moment whilst ripping all my CD's to my hard drive and phone - the phone is rather annoying at the moment as it is crashing and keeps opening the photo gallery every time I put the phone down... Just added 211 Damned tracks that i've bought recently to my collection - got to laugh.

Rebecca and Jamie are super cool still. Jamie is pretty much able to ride his bike now without stablisers - which is quite impressive. Trouble is he's learnt it on the big bike where he cannot touch his feet on the floor as the small bike is broken (me trying to put stablisers on it - Rebecca's small one is broken too - chain keeps coming off both of them!).

We've also been out in the garden tidying up ready for Winter which has come along this week. Rebecca and Jamie helped me out in the garden with the leaves.

Redwing

I've just bought a new camera lens for my Canon so I can take more photos of wildlife when I'm at home. I've been working at home today and this is a bird eating in next door's garden - not too bad given the distance. I'm not sure, but I think this is a redwing - click the title which takes you to the RSPB site. I also took photos of a blackbird and robin.

Annie and Wardy leaving

Annie and Wardy are off today, the Watts family wishes them all the best for their new exciting journey to Canada, though of course we will miss them dreadfully. They've been tremendously good friends for the last 15 years or so, Annie is even Rebecca's Godmother. We will be looking forward to some skiing in Canada soon though!!

To celebrate their off, they held a couple of events down at the Sports Club. The Saturday night at the club has to rate as one of the best nights I've attended at the club. So many people popped along to say farewell that I hadn't seen for ages, I didn't get round to see everyone but it was certainly an unforgettable evening - I am pleased I didn't go to Winkers though lol.

We've also been to Katy and George's wedding the weekend before. A lovely service in Old Amersham, I've not been to that church before and then on to Bisham Abbey for the daytime and evening. I didn't realise that the river ran the other side of the abbey, it was a stunning backdrop for their wedding photos and the day, just a shame it wasn't slightly warmer. Unfortunately as the day progressed I discovered I was the only one drinking red wine on the table and found myself drinking the bottles on the table.

The following day was the Windsor hockey tournament - I haven't been to that event for years, probably almost a decade! It was great to meet a few new faces at the tournament from our club and the mixed team that it still going as strong. It was the mixed team in the mid 90's where the old CSP gang brought the club back from extinction - Annie, Sarah and Catherine were a massive part of the vibrancy that came back to the club.

I've also played a couple of games for the 2's since my last post, I picked up a dead leg against Rover Oxford and could hardly walk for Annie's do and then cramp in my calf this Saturday which went whilst changing gear in the car and then felt like a pull - I was still hobbling around on Sunday, I think it is ok now though. The hockey this year is very good - the most I've enjoyed it in years - we are arranging for a baby sitter every weekend so we can both play. Wardy played last Saturday and was magnificent in his last game for the club (in a while - i'm sure we can get them both playing when they pop back in the country sometime).

Hockey and Eastbourne

The weekend was extremely busy non-stop. Friday night was spent doing my expenses and invoicing - incredibly early for me in the month... Saturday I played hockey for the 2's against Abingdon 1s. We won 1-0 but it was hard work - I was left half and then right half (much better) but I was working from D to D - very tired by the end of it. Very pleased to get the win though. Back home and in the bar for a few beers - and serving a few too!!

In the evening worked again for a few hours - mostly on my sister's web site I've just 'launched'. It is nowhere near finished yet, but it is good practice for Actinic V9 - my first launched site in V9. I waited for V8 to be stable but never seemed to get there and then they launched V9!! As I've been working with Actinic since V2 I know you have to wait a while before it is stable... In fact, I've been working in V9.04 all day today on another site and had a few crashes which has been rather annoying. Regular snapshot backups...anyway, I digress.

Anyway, so went down to see the Watts family on Sunday in Eastbourne. Good value as always, arrived nice and early played some games on the large lawn - though it was fairly chilly, nice roast lamb, then down to the beach to soak a few items of clothing. We had a look round the rock pools off the end of the normal beach but didn't really find much this time - the tide was right in pretty much.

Very busy week this week with work every night - and probably not playing hockey this weekend as Katie Shaw / Shanksy's weddding which should be a good knees up. Saying that I think I might be playing at the Windsor mixed hockey tournament on Sunday - last one (Wallingford) we cancelled so assume this one is still on...

Most Beautiful Countryside

We had Ash and Debs and co down last weekend for a quiet weekend. I managed to persuade Ash to pick up a hockey stick for the first time in a few years for a game with the 2's - he wasn't bad at all either considering. We then went down the club and then took the children for a walk by the river next to the clubhouse. I'm always stunned by how beautiful it is down there. We took a baguette of bread down with us (kindly donated by 2's captain davey) and fed some swans and cygnets - which was handy as we've been reading the ugly duckling recently.

Been flat out with work as usual but did manage to go up to training on Thursday which surprised myself. Not bad for the first hour.

Sort of launched my sister's new web site www.shole.co.uk with a few character sets on it - but the people I bought the stuff from have gone bust so I'm going down to Eastbourne on Sunday with R & J to photo some new products as well. Haven't quite got the extended information pages right yet - but it is my first live web site using Actinic V9 - a world away from V7. Just as they prepare to bring out V10 crikey.... I had to finish it fairly quickly though as I think the Google Toolbar must have sent back info on it to Google and we had some orders before I realised there was traffic on it whoops. It was nowhere near ready. I couldn't be bothered to put a robots.txt file to stop them looking round - my own fault I suppose.

Gardening and Other Horticulture

Having not posted on my blog much recently, I must apologise but I have been up to my eyes with web work and things. I'm almost starting to recover now from our holiday and catching up with a few things - well not quite so overloaded.

Minimal time has been spent in the garden this year - much of the work in late spring has had to carry through to now. The vegetable garden had mixed results:

- Rasberries / Strawberries - new section, went well but all fruit eaten by something, the strawberries are sending out runners so need to do something with them other than mow them
- Runner beans - worst ever year - probably not picked enough when we were away and has been too dry for them - and they caught rust again - despite the fact I changed all the poles and things
- Red Cabbages - grew really well but were just holes by the end of August with masses of caterpillars on it so pulled them out
- Potatoes - very good
- Onions - I think they've grown well but are now covered in weeds - whoops
- Peas - very good will be expanded
- Artichoke - good but waste of time takes too much room up
- Carrots - good again in their pots
Greenhouse
- Cucumbers - not very good at all for some reason
- Tomatoes - best year in ages - no blight this year so the cleaning worked - and the diligence of opening the greenhouse
- Peppers - best ever but still quite small peppers - only green ones

The lawn has been looking fabulous - but very brown now.

Anyway, I finally got round to pruning the fir trees in the back of the garden - cut down half in size - I didn't realise until I went in the shower that i'd shredded my arms and legs and were burning. Had to laugh - there will be quite a difference when I've finished - I couldn't do a few as didn't fancy balancing at the top of a ladder with the chainsaw.

Weekend in Eastbourne

Sarah was galavanting round the gorges of the Breacon Beacons last weekend, so I took the opportunity to take flight down to Eastbourne and catch up with the family, once I had taken R & J to a couple of parties they were invited to.

We turned up after some long traffic jams on Saturday afternoon and we made some giant bubbles which was great fun. Their garden really is extraordinary, so much room and things in it. The selection of fruit and veg is astounding.

Sunday we popped down to Auntie Sarah's for a bar-b-q which was jolly good fun indeed and R & J throughly wore themselves out.

On Monday the Birger family turned up for more Rebecca present giving - her birthday lasted more than 8 days which is fairly impressive! Rebecca was over the moon to see her Uncle John. They stayed up rather late and for the first time in years I had to wake both of them up on Tues morning at 8.00.

Great stuff :-)

On Tour, Rebecca's Birthday Party, Garden

I popped on tour last week to Wayfarers (Wimborne Dorset) and bumped into quite a few people from A & C HC. I went down with a team made up of players from Tring, Aylesbury, Old Georgonians and Canterbury. Mixed 7's and we didn't take any ladies - the team pride themselves on recruiting when they get there!! lol. Friday night was pretty hard going after a very time consuming drive down there but managed to push through (I think). I think the marquee dancing finished around 2am... Saturday was quite interesting playing hockey with a thumping headache (must have been the stress of driving) and then driving home in the early evening....

To prepare for Rebecca's birthday party on Sunday morning - or watch Sarah prepare for it anyway. We had a lovely morning down at the Sports Club for a Glitter Girls party. R is looking scarily older already...

The rest of the week has been spent working pretty hard and feeling rather knackered. I also have a new camera to take better photos at work too. I just thought I was getting on top of work when all of a sudden I'm avalanched again.

Not sure particularly what I've achieved, I launched a new art gallery for British Battles today - but still plenty of work to be done on it. I've also been messing around with Adwords, Google Base and a bit more. Hoping to launch a Furniture web site next week.

The garden is looking pretty good a the moment, though I think the badgers must be wandering off course as they are digging large holes in front of the kitchen each evening which i'm having to repair - a bit annoying. We now have tomatoes to eat and cucumbers about to be ready - runner beans are only about a week away too I think. Plenty of slugs around - they've eaten a lot of the peas unfortunately. Gutted.

Vista PC Problems

As always I have a few grumbling problems with my Vista PC. However, they are getting slightly more annoying recently. For some reason, I currently have a Dreamweaver problem which means I have to delete a wincache data file each time I want to load it successfully.

The other problem is Outlook 2007 keeps wanting to corrupt itself. i have to keep rebuilding it with scanpst.exe. Currently each time I'm logging into my mail account it is deleting all the email of the mail servers. So on one email account alone it is downloading 450 emails each time it logs on every 15 minutes and I have to go through and clear them out again - multiply that across several email addresses it is getting a bit laborious. This Outlook problem was on top of the fact it was refusing to close a server connection and me have to start task manager each time and crash outlook so it would move on to the next email box. In fact, since starting this paragraph, the repair hasn't worked so my email is being rendered useless.

It also seems that doing upgrades to things like Safari, Skype etc entails wiping them off my machine and then doing a fresh install for it to work as Vista permissions doesn't let me do it otherwise.

My linux machine would be ok except I've forgotten the log in password so cannot currently get in. I have downloaded a page of linux instructions to overcome it - but its not top of my list....

Strawberry Fair

We went along to Rebecca's school today to watch her perform in a dance and singalong for a few minutes. The day is very well organised by the PTA and it just appears to be a giant social - so many people there that I know - and everyone else seems to know everyone.

Rebecca and Jamie had a great day to with Rebecca bumping into all her friends and playing with them. They were both pretty knackered by the time we got back home though - and after being fuelled by sweets and ice creams!!

Martin and Mel popped up in the morning as well which was very nice - when we got back home after the fete, Rebecca was very disappointed to see he wasn't there still!!

Happy Birthday to Martin for yesterday, quite a few people popped down to the White Hart and then the Lemon Grass to celebrate. I decided I would retry the Hari Murci - not actually that tasty - pretty spicey though.

New Slide

We've got a new addition to the garden - a slide. Rebecca and James are ever so pleased with it. A sand pit also came our way too :-)

The garden is coming along nicely at the moment. We are eating plenty of vegetables out of the garden. I cooked some artichokes for the first time last Friday - what a faff - especially as they take so much room up in the limited space I have to grow veg. We are also tucking into fresh peas, mange tout (Rodney), the odd French bean and some new potatoes. We have also picked our first couple of tomatoes from the greenhouse.

Been really busy working and things not been stopping for a second. Off to either hockey or the sports club AGM on Thursday evening - very important as going to be a bit of a shake up after the last couple of years worth of stealing that has been happening. Quite important that as many people as possible get down there...

I've organised a couple of Badgers games which have gone ok. I lost my match ball last Monday which has rather annoyed me. Some good youngsters coming through though which is very encouraging.

Going on tour to Wayfarers in a couple of weeks, though have to come back early for Rebecca's birthday party. Might also go on another one later in the summer - been invited to another three or four I think.

Work is mental as always. Recruited a new member of staff the other week - had over 200 C.V.'s for the job... terrible employment market out there at the moment.

Dad has had another operation on his throat to try and keep it open so he can eat and drink - so another distraction for us - in a lot of pain I think :-(

Anyway, I'll try not to leave it as long for the next post.

Pilch and Emma Get Married

We went to Pilch and Emma's wedding last Saturday. The service was in St Peter's Church in St Albans and then we retired to a Hunton Park Manor House just down the road (though we managed to go via Chesham due to a wrong turn on the A41 anyway I digress).

It was a beautiful wedding and the whole day was just fabulous. We met up with lots of people we hadn't seen for a while - Catherine flew back from Kaliningrad and everyone had an excellent time. Wardy and I particular enjoyed the lamb for the main course... They even managed to arrange a spectacular thunder and lightning hailstorm - fortunately we were already inside and had enjoyed the good weather for the photos and things.

Anyway, splendid day, splendid wedding, splendid company and even had a splendid breakfast on the Sunday morning. Only the first or second time Sarah and I have spent the night alone without the children since they were born.

We went to vote last night in the European and Bucks CC elections. I do believe strongly in voting as our democratic right - no matter who you vote for - people sacrificed their lives for us to vote. Jamie scootered there and Rebecca cycled really well there too. Once there, there was a steady stream of people going in and out of the polling booth - and had a quick chat with some old parish council colleagues whilst I was up there. I do miss not being on the local council funnily enough, but I just don't have enough time at the moment. When I was a councillor I was an independent - fortunately there aren't 'expenses' as such at parish council level - and the web site which I maintained I did it practically at cost.

However, when I was due for re-election, I was approached to stand for District and Bucks and funnily enough, part of the reasoning given to me was you could make a lot of money from expenses. This is now of course becoming even more pertinent with the current climate and strikes me this goes through the whole system down to grass roots level. I did tell a few people at the time but obviously it wasn't on the radar. I'm not massively bothered by the whole MP's expenses 'scandal' as such as it was a given that it was in lieu of pay rises, though some of them like the moat claims are just laughable - and in comparison to proper fraud by overseas politicians it is nothing. The thing that does bother me most and seems to have been largely buried is the Lords being bought of to change legislation. I'm absolutely astonished this hasn't been the major headline and they aren't being charged with something - absolutely outrageous.

On a lighter note, I played hockey again last night for the 1/2's in Eastcote - against South Bucks. I played at the back again and this time we won. I came off pretty knackered though - amazing how much running I was doing at centre back being guided by Shambles - he was very good in telling me where to move to. One of my strong points I normally think is my passing skills, however, at the back as you know you are last in line I was getting rather flustered and putting some terrible 'passes' in - shocking they were. Just need to crack the composure and it'll be fine. One of the Midfield shouted simple passes to me afterwards - it couldn't have been a simpler pass I just screwed it up!! South Bucks didn't use the new rules at all which was interesting - and we didn't much for the start of the game. We won 3-1 though.

Off to Pilch's stag do later today - with Clodder as his best man - down in Bournemouth - hope the rain isn't as bad as they are predicting...

Hockey, hot weekend and other things

We've had rather nice weather recently which has been rather good. It means it is full steam ahead in the garden - or wilt as the case may be...

Rebecca and James with Sarah's rather clever help replicated Catherine's ice cream shop again this weekend. A cardboard cut out so they could sell us ice creams.

On Sunday Warren and Zoe and family popped round which was very pleasant - a very hot day but we had roast chicken!! Managed to make the chicken last for three meals which was rather good. Boiled up the left overs in some rice on Monday and it tasted surprisingly good with a few additions such as a lemon and things.

I played hockey on Thursday in Eastcote against Eastcote - a 7pm push back and I played at sweeper - I had to run rather a lot which I wasn't banking on. We lost 5-0 too which probably doesn't say much about my defending skills - though I did rather enjoy it - and as odd as it sounds we mostly had posession in their half and Chris and I were left with 3 vs 2 or 4 vs 2 for most of the goals!! Also played a friendly at Newland park last night. I was wondering whether that would be the last ever game at Newland Park - the astro really is very thin up there compared with the playing surface at Eastcote. Playing again this Thurs I think.

Off to Pilch's stag do in Bournemouth this weekend - well I think so anyway - cannot leave until early evening. We seem to be booked up for just about every weekend for the coming months.

The garden is going pretty well - the first few tomatoes have appeared already in the greenhouse which is rather early. Work is flat out as normal.

Seaford Parade, Eastbourne Beach and Gardening Update!

We as a family had a very relaxing and enjoyable bank holiday weekend. We popped down to Eastbourne on the Saturday morning first thing avoiding all the traffic and went down to the beach - where it was fairly overcast and not particularly warm.

As we were there the beach went down to low tide so were hunting round the rock pools to see if we could find any wildlife which was good fun.

Back at the house, we had taken the stablisers of Rebecca's bike and she managed to cycle across the whole lawn without falling off which was pretty impressive - more so given that grass isn't the easiest surface to learn on. Jamie was of course really wanting to do the same, but he is some way off yet - not least he cannot touch the floor yet - he can just about stretch to the peddles!

On Sunday we went down to Seaford on the bus from Friston for a village parade they were having. It was an absolutely glorious day down there, the highlight was of course the bus ride. The first photo is of them on a train ride at the fair which was at the end of the parade. It was so good we all were slightly burnt in various places - arms and backs.

The bus service really is good down there - it is every 10-15 minutes between Brighton and Eastbourne hardly any need to drive really and you get to see the beautiful scenery in between.

On Monday we spend the day in the garden in the sunshine which was really nice. I finished off planting all the greenhouse plants in to the garden and clearing more space in the veg patch. It is fair to say it is absolutely packed now. I have several vegetables I've not planted before including peas, onions, red cabbage, strawberries and parsnips.

Weekend - new warehouse neighbour

Had a fairly relaxing weekend as i've already posted - mostly gardening and working though. Working on a load of things at the moment which is weighing us down. We finally have an advert going out looking to recruit someone in the near future - so that should help us out.

In the warehouse where I work some of the time someone else has moved in next to us - and it is a toy distributor / importer. He was showing us some of the toys he has brought in today and I think I could be spending quite a bit of money - one of the toys was really simple a kind of marble tree - it started at the top and made a deeper noise as it went down - doesn't sound great from my description but was good for little ones.

The garden is doing well at the moment - i'm not sure where i'm going to put everything that we have in the greenhouse in the garden. I'm going to be cutting a bit more lawn up I think. Still have runner beans, sweetcorn, french beans, strawberries and red cabbages to find room for in my plot. Already sown are dwarf runner beans, peas, mange tout, spinach, onions, potatoes, carrots and parsnips. The photo shows some of the veg plot as well as R & J trying to fly the kite I bought (which isn't very good).

As if I wasn't busy enough already, I've also volunteered to help out with Badgers over the summer - as otherwise we'd have had to pull the team out.

Worthing Hockey Tour

Spent a cracking few days down in Worthing a couple of weeks ago now. A great crowd of hockey ladies and gentlemen complimented a very well organised tour. I think everyone enjoyed themselves with plenty of drinking and plenty of hockey.

Not the most raucous tour I've been on but thoroughly enjoyable. I have posted up over 200 photos on my Facebook account. The fancy dress evening was the most amazing fancy dress i've been to - some unbelievable costumes - simply stunning.

Apart from that, I've been rather busy with work, had a couple of chats about hockey and the parent company - some very productive chats I should say - and interesting revelations. The hockey AGM is this Thurs where all facts will be laid bare. The CPSA AGM is shortly afterwards.

I'm not sure whether or not to organise another hockey tour - I didn't get any feedback from the forum so might just go with the Usual Suspects - as they have four or five planned. They never have any ladies though... I think that is part of the attraction for them!!

Off to Worthing this bank holiday for my first hockey tour since I organised one in Devon for Charlie's stag do 18 months ago.

We are visiting the South coast mixed hockey festival with 10 men from at least four different hockey clubs around the South East - A & C, Canterbury, Aylesbury, Tring (possibly) and I think Georgonians somewhere near Weybridge...maybe. We only have four ladies unfortunately - not to worry i'm sure we can 'acquire some' to help us out or play with six men.

I haven't tested my hamstring since I pulled it the day of the dinner and dance - so I'm wondering whether I'll leave the festival bar at any point. I have also purchased a hawaiian outfit for the Saturday night fancy dress - hopefully most of the team - the Questionables - will be wearing it.

Speaking of South Coast, we popped down to Eastbourne last weekend - and had a lovely time too. We were trying to teach Rebecca how to cycle on the grass - and she managed to make it most of the way across which is pretty tricky. She was keen to carry on so will have to sort it out at home. We also had a lovely walk on the Downs in Friston -
stunning views, and some paddling in the sea which R & J loved. R is always on a creative lookout and she pulled together a load of seaweed and made a face.

Charlie also flew off to Australia on Saturday - good luck to him and Annalisa.

Lent - thank goodness its over

I'm not particularly religious, and I've never given up something for lent before - I don't think, well not for a while. This year I decided to give up cakes and chocolate - as I was consuming vast quantities of them.

Superb Easter Weekend

What a great Easter we had - pretty tired after it all - back to work for a rest!!

After Jamie's birthday celebrations earlier in the week which were extremely enjoyable with all the grandparents and a few friends - the Easter break kicked off on Thursday with a few beers down at the white hard with a few mates - didn't want to drink much as had to do some work on Friday morning - ended up having tomato juice with quite a lot of Tabasco sauce in it - quite tasty - though pretty spicy too.

Ash and Debs came down from Ipswich with Lauren and Max - R & J were so looking forward to seeing them and they set off as though they see each other every day!! Unfortunately it was quite wet so we went to Zoom in Beaconsfield on Friday afternoon for them to burn some energy off.

We then decided that a train trip and a visit to the Science Museum would be a good thing to do on a wet Saturday - the trains were packed and so was the museum - unsurprisingly I suppose - but the children absolutely loved it. Rebecca is so 'arty' that she insisted I took photos of her next to most of the exhibits in the transport section - I'm pleased she did though. Sarah and I thoroughly enjoyed it as well as it happens - I'd quite like to go round on my own / with Sarah so we can read and look at a few more of the displays.

Sunday Ash and Debs left and we tidied up the house and just did some pottering around - Ash and I had been to the snooker halls with Martin the night before and had a few beers!!

Monday we went to Sarah's mum and dad's boat and even had a trip towards Portsmouth from Fareham on the boat - the first time r & j have sailed / motored on the sea. We then went to Uncle John's boat - a beautiful boat in Portsmouth where we stayed for a few hours, had tea and then left - though it was so warm, my face was glowing like a beetroot by the evening.

Busy week with work coming up - though not at work on Friday. Broke the record today for the most amount of consignments we've ever sent out - and I've loads of web design work to do as well. All good fun though :-)

I think I might post a load of photos up on facebook later this week if I have time. I've also got to put the finishing touches to the hockey tour. One lady short which is a shame - I thought there would be quite a lot of demand for tour when I was asked to sort it out. Should be good anyway - only just over two weeks away now...

Beautiful Weekend

I know I haven't posted for a while and so much has happened in the last 10 days - though with any luck another blog might appear below this one tomorrow - backwards posting...whatever next!

Had a lovely weekend in the sun - just what I needed. We didn't do too much - a lovely walk with Annie, Cash and Mylo - a long walk as it turned out but with some stunning countryside - and all just on our doorstep - just the other side of Newland Park over to Heronsgate in a long circular walk. Rebecca and James did very well to keep up and walked quite a lot of it.

Speaking of Rebecca and James - they are very well at the moment, and seem to be growing up really quickly. Jamie will be three this week - three...already... anyway, Mum and Dad will be up which will be good as I haven't seen them for a while - possibly even Christmas...goodness, surely I must have seen them since then.

I've also been flooded out with work recently, working until midnight most evenings - it is all very enjoyable work though. Mark has also re-launched our main plastic glasses web site in CSS over the weekend - so we shall see what happens with that!!

I helped Warren out with some house painting on Friday night - I must say the work they've had done on their house has made it look absolutely fabulous - well done them. I'd arranged to cook Martin brunch on Saturday morning. However, I must confess I was so so tired after the week of work and over doing it - he arrived at 10.40 and I was still fast asleep in bed - unheard of even for me to sleep that long - and I think if he hadn't of turned up I could have stayed there until midday!!

So on that bombshell, I'd better go to bed now!

Garden is looking Beautiful

All the work we've done on the top lawn section and the flower bed in the photo below has paid dividends this spring. It is a stunning ray of colour outside our patio doors with polyanthus, tulips, dafodils and more. I am wondering whether there will be much colour in it in two months though!!

Hockey Weekend Dinner and Dance

A mostly great weekend - very busy as usual. We went out to Amersham for Wardy's birthday - at the old Cafe uno restaurant - taken over by someone else. Unfortunately I was rather thirsty after a busy day and polished off a couple of bottles of wine.

Fortunately I felt fine on Saturday, and was I thought playing rather well on the right hand side of the hockey pitch for the 2's - rolling back and years and seemingly quite fit - until my hamstring went - very strange - I felt fine, no warnings but suddenly I was mid sprint again and it went and just ended up on the floor with one of the opposition holding my leg in the air!! I was hoping it was just cramp due to dehydration and the night before, but alas not - it was still painful for the following week and sitting down at the dinner dance and definitely couldn't dance.

The dinner dance was a great evening, and I must compliment Rowe and Martin and whoever else was involved for the tremendous amount of work they put in to make it happen. Sarah and I left at midnight with Beanie having had yet another great evening. Here are a couple of photos - I've put 'all' my photos on Facebook.

It was great to see young Mr Pilch again gracing club supper - and Catherine flew in from Kaliningrad no less - I popped down the road.

Leaking Greenhouse

My greenhouse is still leaking water - I cannot believe it - I thought my concreting and guttering project was amazing - clearly not.

So siliconing from the inside this weekend.

I also cannot believe how much time i'm spending on my greenhouse - just to try and avoid getting blight again on a few tomoatoes...

We shall see come September I suppose....

Dan and Jenny's Wedding

Congratulations to Dan and Jenny who were married on Saturday in Thame. We popped along in the evening - just in time for Martin to wake up - and it was amazing how many people we knew - like a great big CSP get together but in Thame!! Dan and Jenny both looked absolutely fabulous and enjoying the day / evening. Apologies for the quality of the photo - my phone is rubbish in the evening / dark.

I had played hockey earlier in the day in Brent Cross - and somehow we beat West Hampstead - despite them being camped in our half for the whole of the second half. I was very stiff and sore on Sunday.

I managed to get up on Sunday for Mothering Sunday - r & j have been getting up with the dawn which is pretty knackering - I managed to keep going until the afternoon when all three of us fell asleep leaving Sarah to wonder what had happened!!

A very pleasant weekend though which was finished off by planting some seeds in the greenhouse - which had been cleaned on Saturday morning to try and remove the last remnands of any blight. We planted some red onions, dward runner beans and some strawberries - though the seeds were so small for the strawberries I'm not sure if r & j will have planted them ok...

Hockey and Greenhouse

Played hockey on Saturday for the 2's. My knee didn't give me too much trouble - but about half way through the second half my back became really painful - which was really annoying as I was feeling pretty fit still - in fact to the end I was still managing plenty of running between the two d's. We also won 6-3 which was good.

I often get back pain when I am dehydrated, so I did a quick search this morning - and arthritis popped up everywhere on the search results. D'oh. Looks like another manifestation of my arthritis then - have to make sure I drink masses before a game in future to avoid the problem - apparently there is a water cushion between the discs in the spine - and no water means back problems for me with the arthritis. Still very painful today - Tuesday. My knee is also painful - which takes my mind off my back lol. Maybe I shouldn't play hockey again this weekend.

Decided to try and waterproof the greenhouse on Sunday - it was a beautiful sunny day so made the most of it. We put a load of concrete around the base to try and stop water running in when it rains and causing the blight which has affected my tomatoes so badly for the last two years. Just have to clean it with some special stuff I bought this weekend and it is ready for use. I already have a few onions on the go in the garage - and one pea!! I've already bought some potting soil so will be doing some early cucumbers and tomatoes I think this weekend...

D'oh, after being rather smug about my Arthritis not coming back this year..... its rumbling in my right knee - having a few problems bending it - which is a bit boring. My throat glands were really sore on Monday so that was a giveaway - but feel fine tonight.

Hope I can still walk ok for Saturday as I'm down to play hockey for the 2's again this week.

Hockey, Walking and working

Actually played hockey this weekend - somehow our schedules fitted to allow me to play an away game in Milton Keynes. I sort of enjoyed it but I was certainly not of my usual touch in front of goal - had a couple of half chances I'd have expected to have done better than I did with. We drew 1-1 in the end. I was planning to pop in to Wolverton on the way back to have a look at a Watts MBE that is buried in the church there and the Wolverton Working Men's Club as apparently there was many years ago a picture hanging up of him. Fortunately, some people wanted a lift back so I had some company instead for the hour long trip back.

I mentioned the Worthing tour I'm organising and was rather surprised to hear that almost nobody had heard of it as particularly the younger players have never read or heard of the hockey forum. Maybe my subsidy of almost £200 a year is pointless!! Anyway, they know about it now. I'll have to do some flyers for the club supper / dinner dance.

I cannot tell you any more about the Newland Park project - as I seem to have been ex communicated by the new hierachy that have commandeered it. Fair enough I suppose means I don't have to do anything. It is stunning how the University have behaved though - probably best all I say.

Went for a really nice walk on Sunday - just after the rain had fallen around the NSE - R & J loved walking through the puddles and jumping in them - their feet were soaking despite sarah's best efforts to make them waterproof. As I was walking round I was thinking what a great place to put a double astro and club house to compliment the existing facilities there!!

Saturday night me Charlie, Chris and Scott went out for a Chinese and a few drinks in Wycombe (I was driving so lemonade for me!). It was a very enjoyable night out - though getting back at 1.30 I was pretty knackered.

The rest of the weekend was spent working as I have won 3 new web site contracts and masses of work from existing customers - which is good. I'm trying not to over do it though so I avoid getting my Arthritis back again.

No Hockey

I actually committed to some hockey this weekend - and South Bucks pulled out as they couldn't get a team together.

This is quite a sad barometer for the sport as South Bucks I think run four teams and so they are struggling to get their second XI out - i heard they are still running the 3's and 4's - which the league are apparently cross about. Anyway, South Bucks was born out of a merger between Richings Park and Farnham common - each of which had at least 3 or 4 teams - so they are losing close to five teams.

That is a real pity as clubs are dying everywhere - I'm guessing it'll only be a couple of years before Amersham and Chalfont merge with Gerrards Cross Hockey Club - meaning another loss of another club.

When I started playing in about 1995 there was CSP, GX, Richings Park, Farnham and Amersham. So that could be down to 2 soon or even one - quite scare and disasterous for hockey.

Half Term Week

Sarah was off most of last week and I was off on Friday as it was half term week. I had a lovely day with Rebecca and Jamie, it was just warm enough to go outside and mess around a bit. Rebecca is really arty and was looking forward to taking pictures outside of flowers and things - so she was very pleased when we also printed a load of pictures off too. She even found a caterpillar in the garden whilst clearing some leaves away. James loves digging in the garden - we will have to find a little patch for them this year I think - reminds me of when I was a Little boy, Sarah and I both had a little gardening patch right at the end of the garden

The weekend was pretty good too, round to Annie's for her birthday - ate all her vine leaves - very tasty - then the Sports Club quiz - about half the number of people who normally turn up. They also ran out of fosters fairly early on - which meant I was on Stella - which didn't do me any good at all...

Sunday we had another great pottering around the garden and a lovely Roast Chicken - stuffed it with cut up lemons and covered it in bacon and butter - the roast potatoes were delicious roasted in butter!!!

Looking at the attached photo, r & j are already growing up so very quickly - it is unbelievable.

Sarah's birthday

Sarah celebrated her 29th birthday again last week - along with Potty and Annalisa - congratulations to everyone.

We had a lovely (Waitrose prepared) meal round our house on Saturday night which was very pleasant, though the port took its effect the following day as well... We also had a very enjoyable family get together at the White Hart. Rebecca was particularly thrilled to see Uncle John Again!!

I was very very pleased to have Mark back from skiing this week - mostly in one piece - i've had to get on with a huge backlog of web design work this week. Probably have to work most of this weekend to clear a bit of it - which means no hockey. Fortunately hockey was cancelled last weekend so I was able to run around and get things for Sarah's birthday - bedlam in Sainsbury's Beaconsfield on Saturday - absolutely nowhere to park - chaos - I really really hate shopping at the best of times!!

Green Woodpecker

With the cold snap and plenty of snow and ice, we have been busy keeping the bird feeder topped up, water defrosted in the bird bath and the bird table full of food.

As a result the garden has been very very busy indeed with wildlife - most of it welcome! I really need to purchase a digital slr - but here is a photo of a Green Woodpecker that visited recently. There are plenty of smaller birds as well - and two foxes were roaming the paddock behind us today - one of them curled up and went to sleep!!

It is surprisingly rewarding bringing the wildlife to the garden and sustaining them.

Snow and Birthday

I 'celebrated' my birthday the other day with a few friends up at the Three Pidgeons - a lovely sirloin steak was my selection - I hardly ever chose steak as it happens. The meal was up to a good standard again - which is odd as i've been hearing a few negatives about the place.

This week the snow absolutely flooded down and we had a great time. It wasn't particularly handy work wise but that is a different story entirely. Next door very kindly lent us their sledge they dug out of the loft and we had some great fun in the back garden.

The snow has been good for wildlife too - or rather me spotting wildlife. Filled the garden up with seeds and bread and warm water and they came in their droves - well quite a few anyway. Even had a woodpecker on my garden this morning - digging it up...Not sure where i've put the photos for the wildlife though!!

I've also played a couple of games of hockey - for the 2's and 1's. I expect it'll be 4's soon!! Got to laugh.

Train Trip to London

I've been extremely busy recently with work and also at home. Work has been absolutely flat out loads of things happening at the moment with lots of fresh enquiries and older customers wanting more and more work - its amazing! I love it though and love meeting new people.

On Saturday I was back on a hockey pitch - turning up with Rebecca and James minutes before the 2's push back against Slough. It was pretty much the only game I could play. We lost unfortunately though I managed to sneak a goal in.

On Sunday we went to London to have lunch in China Town with a few of Sarah's work colleagues. What a tremendously enjoyable day we had - it was the first time they had been on the underground - we couldn't believe how busy it was - James loved the trains and was more interested in going home on the train than anything else!

I'm realising how out of date this web site is these days - but i've absolutely no chance of updating it. I need to do a blog set up for Chalfont Web Design and I've been buying lots of postcards of Chalfont St Peter for the village web site but had no time to scan those and upload them either!

Cater For You is very busy for a January - we have lots more stock in - including disposable coffee cups. Some really exciting things are happening with the business now it has moved in to a much large warehouse.

Fabulous Christmas and New Year

I think I had one of my best Christmas and New Years ever. What a fantastic time we had as a family. On Christmas day we had the whole of the Birger family round - i cooked the turkey for 12 people - and still managed to over cater though - if you have been round you know I always manage that. Rebecca loved seeing Uncle John and took most of his time up through the day!! I managed to keep the turkey dishes coming for the following four days after Christmas!!

We saw quite a few people over the break, including a trip up to Ipswich to see ash and debs and their family. Rebecca and James love to see them - and we had a lovely walk to Pin Mill - what a beautiful location.

New Years Eve was also particularly splendid with Warren, Zoe, Geoff and HJ popping round for a slow roast lamb (out of Jamie Oliver - a delicious recipe) and a suitable hangover the following day.

We then popped down to Eastbourne to see my Mum and Dad and my sister. Rebecca and James love to see Harry and Oliver and Auntie Sarah. These are the only photos I have to hand. Below are some of a walk round the Cuckmere Valley which is stunning, a very cold beach trip - but the children love seeing the beach :-)

I also managed to get masses of work done - mostly on the new Grant and Stone web site which should be going live next week I'm hoping. I think it is one of my best so far if not the best. Huge amount of pages.

CBEEBIES Live

Still feeling rather rough. Managed to haul myself out of bed for CBEEBIES live on Saturday morning. Purchased the tickets a while ago and Rebecca and James were quite excited to be going. The show was at Wembley Arena so we went on the train. I think James was more interested in the train ride than the actual show. I think Rebecca enjoyed it! We bumbed into quite a few people Sarah knew which was amusing.

Went to bed in the afternoon!! Then out at John and Jenny's for a very pleasant party - though i'm afraid I was hacking my way through the whole thing - especially if I was talking.

Cooked the Roast lunch on Sunday then went straight to bed until 5.30 which surprised me. Then went to bed at 9 and straight to sleep!! I've missed most of the parties i've been invited to and not had a drop of alcohol for about three weeks I think now...

Did I tell you i'd re-launched my Web Design site - rather nice CSS site now. Quite a few more in the pipeline now.

I've finally launched a couple of my new web sites. Both using CSS rather than tables - i've finally weened myself off.

My web design site has finally had a facelift and CSE Cables has also had the treatment. I'm monitoring them closely to see if they move up the search engines. So far CWD has gone down!!

I'll probably end up revamping most of my web sites now - including this one which is looking very tired and dated now.

Sarah and Ang visit, Cash for Dinner + hockey

Oh my goodness, it's almost December already. Sarah has reminded me that Christmas is only a few weeks away so need to start organising things. We've been really busy recently - non stop - at weekends I've either been working or socialising or playing hockey. Last week I played for the 2's - I was surprised how easy it was, right half and just walzing into the opposition's D.

Mum and Dad popped over on the Friday to pick up there new car - and I took delivery of their old one - so now the owner of a honda jazz - instead of the MG ZS which was starting to be a money pit. the insurance is half what it was and i've been averaging about 45mpg - marginally more that what I was getting in the 2.5ltr quad cam MG. The brakes are much better too - though handling isn't - almost lost it on a bend home from work this week which surprised me a bit!

When they left - Sarah came up with Harry and Oliver, we went to the swings to burn some energy off and then my Cousin Angelina and her partner Louie came over for dinner which was a really enjoyable evening indeed.

Then on Sunday when everyone had gone I did a few hours work before going round to Cash's for lunch - a delicious roast lamb. We had a look round his kitchen and it is absolutely fabulous what he has done with that area. Unfortunately Jamie wasn't very well so we had to leave a bit early - though we did go out for a quick walk round the block - Rebecca overcame her fear of dogs and was holding on to the lead (with Cash!).

Wow I've been busy recently both with work and the family.

Been really busy with work as well - Neil popped over and very kindly helped out with a new design for my Chalfont Web Design web site - which is looking very old and dated at the moment so will be good to get the new one up and running. I've also been busy putting up new racking at Cater For You and bringing new suppliers on board and generally sorting out the new warehouse we are in - triple the room which is really exciting.

I've also been busy on loads of web design projects recently - hopefully launching quite a few in the coming weeks. One of them is an ecommerce site for J & J which will have well over 3,000 products on it! Gant and Stone will also hopefully launch with a new design and content in the next few weeks.

Trading Depot is also still moving up the rankings slowly and surely and organic search referrals are almost the same as Adwords now. I guessed it would take about 18 months to start dominating the search engines but we are figuring very highly in a few key search terms already which is very pleasing.

James Loves Hockey

I have been so so busy recently so apologies for not posting before tonight. I have been drowning in work recently - and i'm about to move in to a new huge warehouse as of next week - so my web selling ideas are about to go mad!! So been busy sorting that out as well as normal work.

I've been playing the odd game of hockey, I think about the half league games so far this season, but Jamie has become fanatical. Every waking hour he seems to want to play hockey with us - and now he's even insisting on taking his stick and a ball to sleep with him!!! Got to laugh - he's actually becoming quite good unlike me who can only get in the 3's these days!!

I'll catch up with some more posts soon as lots to talk about such as the great halloween night - brilliant fun in the close and fireworks at the scout hut and much more. I'll be updating the watsy.com web site in the new year - i'm just learning css at the moment - my first site should be launched next week.

Wildlife - Good and Bads - Badgers and Redwing

I normally work from home a couple of days a week at the moment and yesterday I casusally looked outside at the holly tree which appears to be teaming with wildlife at the moment after its berries - and I spotted what looked like a thrush. however, after zooming in and checking on the RSPB web site it looks like it is a redwing which i've not seen before - so that is exciting.

On the bad side, the badgers have been regular visitors each night to my garden - and each night trash about 1ft x 1ft of grass - this is last night's visit. I don't think there is going to be much left of the lawn by the spring at this rate!

Adobe Mac User Show

Another week and another exhibition. Quite rare really as I don't like wasting my time on exhibitions.

Anyway, as you know I purchased the upgrade recently so wanted to see what was new in it. Picked up a few things to make it worthwhile, but felt a bit of a leper as a PC user in a Mac environment - the odd PC comment was also made!! Saying that given my experiences on Vista recently i would love to switch to a Mac - but Actinic doesn't run on a Mac yet.

I've also sorted my Adobe not installing properly this morning - all based around Vista permissions again - http://www.adobe.com/go/kb405598 this might help if you have the same problems.

Also sorted my monitor problem as well - the windows popping up not on the visible screen - i had the 1 & 2 monitors the other way round - which seemed to confuse it - all sorted now though.

I can start some work now!!

Adobe CS4 Design Premium

I purchased an upgrade to my existing web and design toolkit from Adobe this week - primarily of course because it didn't work very well on Vista (CS2 that is - I couldn't do 'save as' in Dreamweaver it would just close straight away). So I happily installed it last night - but low and behold Vista didn't let it install properly because of user access / administration access. Which is all a bit odd as I have the User Account turned off (I needed to do this for Actinic) and also tried a reinstall by right clicking the autorun and install as administrator. I shall see tonight how unsuccessful it was as I wasn't left with any time to actually use the software.

I think it is fair to say the Vista nanny state access is doing my head in - this is on top of my problems with my network 1TB hdd.

Whilst I was waiting for my two DVD set to install, I decided to fire up my old PC with its blank disk in it. I put a downloaded copy of Ubuntu Linux on to a CD and into the blank PC and low and behold it was installed and up and running within about 10 minutes I think. I had a look at it - user friendly, straight on to my network and access the Internet through Firefox and quick as you like.

Perfect for the children if nothing else.

Swing and Hockey

The now weekly trip to the swings whilst Sarah was playing hockey was as enjoyable as always. However, R & J wanted to go and watch Sarah play hockey and they thoroughly enjoyed it too. Jamie and I were playing on the side of the pitch and caught the eye of the coach - jamie not me obviously as he can hit and stop pretty well now. He was ever so pleased to be playing with the grown up balls.

Saturday evening we had Gary and Tigs and other guests for a really nice meal. We had 8 and I think that is the maximum I and the dining room table can cope with. I needed two woks for the food and only just had enough - which was remarkable for those who know my cooking quantities!!

Great week and weekend

What a great weekend last weekend. On Saturday I had a very enjoyable morning with R & J whilst Sarah was playing hockey, then played hockey myself at 4.30 for the 3's - and I have to say I really enjoyed it. We beat Henley 4-2 but the most pleasing thing was the improvement in many of the youngsters who played - it was great to watch and be a part of it. I helped set up a couple of goals and was robbed by an umpire decision of a great dink at the top of the D who said it was outside... robbed.

Anyway... popped down to Eastbourne on Sunday, lovely Roast lunch as per the photo then we all went down to the beach. It was extremely hot and sunny for mid October and all the children loved it. The tide was well out which was quite handy.

Had quite a few interesting developments with work this week - hopefully I can mention it in a couple of weeks time! Dad has also had his cancer results come back as negative again - though why he hasn't been able to eat for a couple of months is a mystery still... I'm still snowed under with work at the moment - and need to clear a lot of it fast.

Great weekend coming up too - not playing hockey which is fine as preparing for Gary coming round for dinner on Saturday evening.

Robert Peston

As well as watching in awe at the current financial crisis - i've been wondering whether this BBC Financial Reporter is actually getting any sleep. I've been subscribing to his blog via RSS for quite a few months now - and he is posting seven days a week and at all hours. He is also on TV at all hours - first thing in the morning on breakfast news then on newsnight about 11pm.

Excellent postings they are too.

I must say having Outlook 2007 and the RSS feeds as part of it is very good - though that is probably the only additional feature they have added to make it worthwhile upgrading.

I was chatting to someone the other day and I was predicting that in 10 years time Microsofts dominance will have been seriously eroded. I hardly ever us much more than the bare minimum of features in Microsoft Office these days. I still haven't got my Linux machine up and running yet - haven't had time - very very busy with work at the moment - so cannot tell whether it is any good for the average user.

Another prediction of mine is that the Government will raise VAT to 21% in the next few years - maybe not in the next 12 months but next 2-3 years. Irish VAT is at 21% yet their corporation tax is much lower - so could be a way to go - either way the uK government is going to have to fill this hole - and whilst inflation is already high they could almost 'bury' the hike in prices - then a year later when it drops out the road to recovery is clear. VAT is also harder to dodge - but I guess is also much harder on the low paid.

James in a Bed / Weekend

Had a fairly quiet weekend - played two games of hockey - on Saturday for the 3's and Sunday for Peter Westaway's 50th Birthday - where it poured with rain. Felt absolutely shattered on Sunday evening - and my right knee has been pretty swollen - so need to be careful I don't over do it. Hockey on Saturday was particularly good as I was playing up front with Martin again for the first time in years just like the old Chalfont days!

Monday morning Jamie wandered into our room to say Good morning, which was ok - except he'd climbed out of his cot - so we had to convert it to a bed last night - and he was over the moon - though he was on the floor by the morning.

Vista Permissions

Something else broken

Not that I like dwelling in my own misery (right) but we were delighted on Friday that Sarah had her car returned after its broken starter motor. It starts better than it ever has since we bought it - Sarah has mentioned that this was a problem and the Knotty Green Vauxhall garage just said it was normal for a diesel vectra.

Anyway, I'd almost got home on Friday to view the car in the drive - and my clutch packed up - so it is now taking the spot in the garage round the corner - previously occupied by the vectra.

We went swimming Sunday morning in Amersham, and I noticed the back tyre was looking a bit flat - further inspection revealed a rather large screw through it - great - so the Vectra has to have yet more cash spent on it... for goodness sake.

Apart from that it was a relatively pleasant weekend playing hockey, swimming and general domestic chores and working....

Ad:Tech Google

Went to an Internet advertising exhibition yesterday with one of my customers - specifically we had a 1 to 1 appointment with our Google Account Manager which was quite interesting. Learnt a few things - we are along the right lines but a few areas to tweak and improve the overall listing.

After the show we went back to Marylebone via Kensington Park - I'd never been through it and was a very pleasant walk indeed.

I've absolutely mountains of work / things to do on my plate at the moment - just finished last month's invoicing today!

Everything breaking again?

Had a pretty good weekend again - mowed the lawn with my hover mower which took a long time - the petrol one has broken down again. Sarah was stranded at Newland Park after hockey as her car broke down - starter motor we think. Ironic really as we were talking about bump starting diesel's the night before in the pub.

r & j love going to the swings in Chalfont St Giles - so went along there again which was good - a beautiful day.

Walked them both to nursery and school this morning (after we'd changed rebecca's clothes after spilling milk all down the original) I was amazed at the amount of dog poo along the way - what is wrong with people - there must have been plenty of kids who managed to trample through it on the way to school - disgusting.

Played hockey myself on Saturday for the 2/3's. It was only a friendly but I was rather appalled at the behaviour of one or two of our players. Constantly moaning about decisions (and they were invariably wrong in their opinion and the umpire was right) leading to a yellow card for constant verbal then the Captain refused to sign the opposition umpires card to say he'd umpired for level one recognition - I was gobsmacked - for a start it is not up to our captain to decide whether he was good enough and secondly he was absolutely fine as an umpire just our bunch of whingers decided he wasn't. Very poor form. It made me wonder why i'd bothered turning out for a game in North London at 4.30 - after working hard all week I want a competitive but enjoyable game of hockey - its fine if the opposition are winding themselves up - but not ourselves - in a friendly too. Absolutely absurd.

Shorting Stopped

I've watched this week with great interest - BBC Business pages have been constantly open and on refresh! As per my blog on Wednesday - the government have stopped short selling - and the shares have rebounded strongly. Which is good as I bought some HBOS shares near their bottom during the week.

I have a busy weekend coming up - i'm actually playing hockey this weekend - well i've replied to say Yes anyway - though away against west hampstead for the 3's late in the evening.

I've been trying to upload our holiday photos to facebook - but it keeps crashing / erroring which is really annoying - I think its their new system they have got.

I wonder who Crystal Palace are going to lose to this weekend. The Championship is looking really strong this year and I suspect even more closely fought that last year. Good job we seem to be losing most of our best players - don't worry - we've got Scowcroft...hmm. I was thinking about the Championship this week and came to the conclusion that a lot of UK players are now playing in this division because of the influx of foreign players to the top flight who are better and probably a lot cheaper! So the strength of the Championship has also been increased by default - just not at the same rate as the Premiership. There is also a lot of good managers in the league.

Financial Markets

I cannot quite believe what is happening at the moment with the financial markets in what appears to be domino meltdown.

Llloyds TSB and HBOS have announced they are talking about merging - with customers of HBOS reportedly starting to take their money out - what is the matter with people? The speculators who are shorting the stock are the ones causing this - and after HBOS they'll target the next bank to make their mega millions - i'm amazed that the government aren't imposing some sort of short term restrictions on this - probably impossible though I guess.

Had a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend - thanks to Annie and Wardy for having us over for dinner :-)

Tomato Blight

For the second year in a row - its been so wet in my greenhouse, the tomatoes have gone rotton on the vine - very frustrating as the few i've had have been very tasty. Had to strip them all out already... The cucumbers have slowed up a bit out of the greenhouse as well.

The rest of the garden is going well though - at the weekend Warren and Zoe came round for Sunday lunch and we have sweetcorn, caugettes, runner beans and french beans out of the garden to eat.

St Giles Show and Blackberry Picking

What a fantastic and busy weekend we had. First up I cycled off to hockey on Saturday morning - bearing in mind i've hardly moved off the sofa since I was ill back in March - so it was a bit of a shock to my system to say the least - enjoyed it though.

Then we pottered off to the St Giles show where we met up with the rest of Sarah's family and had a very good and enjoyable few hours there. Fortunately the clouds held off long enough for it to be a dry afternoon.

On Sunday we had Warren, Zoe and co round for Sunday lunch and then went blackberry picking / a walk round the NSE. R & J always enjoy it and they end up eating loads of fruit lol. As you can see we managed to collect quite a few - which are now in the freezer ready for a pie later in the year!

All in all, a very enjoyable weekend.

Rebecca Starts School

Somehow I managed to hold myself together this week when Rebecca started school for the first time. She didn't take too well to the first drop off but is really enjoying it and now just waltzes in - which is good news.

She looked ever so smart in her new uniform and already seems to have grown up a little bit since leaving nursery. James I think is a bit bemused about Rebecca not being in nursery any more. He went on Monday with Sarah to drop Rebecca off and he tried to go in with her and had to be removed kicking and screaming.
